From the Deputy Principal - Jamie Deverson

Hi everyone and welcome to the 2023 school year. It is so great to be able to start this year without Covid interruptions. Last year we began the year with a staggered start and we weren’t able to gather in groups or have families on site. This year was lovely to be able to see families enter the school grounds with their children and start the year on a positive note. When restrictions lifted towards the end of 2022, we were able to get on with life with some kind of normalcy and begin to invite families back onsite once more. We were also able to celebrate our school's 60th anniversary with a whole school Mass, picnic lunch at Point Malcolm Reserve and then a wonderful end of year concert. The concert was a real highlight of 2022 for me. It was fantastic to see our wonderful Music teacher, Basia Jedrzejczak, and the teachers, working together to create such a spectacular event. The students all did such a great job and really pulled it together on the night to produce their best performances. It was also wonderful to see so many mums, dads, friends and family members in the audience to witness their child’s big night. I hope everyone enjoyed the evening as much as I did. A special mention to Ashley, our principal, who originally had the vision of the concert and co-ordinated the process from beginning to end.

2022 also saw our building works continue with the preparation of 2 new classrooms and a Performing Arts centre above. I can’t wait to see these finished and operational during 2023. Talking about buildings, I was surprised to find when I arrived at St Pius X, that we didn’t have a bike rack anywhere. Because of this, I set off, applied for, and won a grant from ‘Way2Go’ whom we have a long-standing relationship with, and run our Bike Ed program. We were given a grant for $10,000 and with that money we purchased bike racks, a scooter rack and built a shelter. This year we are fully equipped to support children riding to school by any means. If your child has a bike or scooter and would like to ride to school, please encourage them to do so as we’d love to see more children getting to school this way.

2023 promises to be a great year. Hopefully it’s one in which you feel more engaged with the school and your child’s learning. I wish for you all to know that Ashley and I love working with families to ensure their children are flourishing while at school. If you have any concerns or questions, please know that our doors are always open, and we would love to work alongside you, to support your families relationship with the school. Additionally, this year we are excited to announce that Matt Richards, an experienced Apple Educator Specialist will be working with our school. Matt has a wealth of knowledge about Apple products and features and will further develop the competencies of the staff and students in the digital space. We are very lucky to have Matt working with us and are excited about the possibilities of what this appointment will lead to.

Take care,

Jamie
