Safety Information
From time to time we are sent reminders from SAPOL about keeping our children safe. I have copied this for you to consider having a conversation about with your child.
“Students and families are reminded to be wary of approaches from strangers, especially when they are unaccompanied or travelling to and from school. If they are approached students should not respond and should not accept offers of rides or gifts.
Students should seek the assistance of other nearby adults if they feel unsafe and should report the event to a trusted adult (parent or school staff member) as soon as possible.
SAPOL advises that taking out a mobile phone and calling police can deter the offender and they recommend the student making a formal report to their closest police station.”
On Thursday June 6th, we (Valentina Anton, Mason, and Tahlia S from Year 4) went to Bridgewater Primary School with Mr P. to get new ideas and learn about different things we can do at St. Pius X to improve the environment.
When we arrived, we met some other school kids who were there from CBC, Bridgewater Primary and 3 other schools. We then played a game, ‘What animal am I’ with pictures pinned on our back. We had to go to other children from other schools and ask them ‘yes or no’ questions. We got to know the other students through this game.
After this 2 other schools presented their recent ecology projects they have done. We liked one classroom that had plants on each desk and amongst the plant was a mini worm farm. We liked the school that had their own greenhouse. Another school had skylights to increase light and use less electricity.
We then all walked to an amazing nearby reserve with native lilies. We saw and learnt about fungus which turns sticks and leaves into rich soil. We learnt what dew taste like: sweet water. We found a billabong that cleans dirty water from the road, filtering this and turning it into clean water with the help of filtering plants.
We also learnt about an upside down plant. When you lift leaves, you see roots and food for the plant. We found 60 cm tall ant nests. We came back to the school, had lunch and walked around their food garden, including greenhouses, compost making areas, giant rainwater tanks. We finished by going to a secret garden and we then presented to the other schools about our ideas that we are taking back to start at school.
- Getting a greenhouse
- An eco friendly coffee machine.
- More nude food days..... we think every Monday from now on and we should start this in Term 3!
