World Environment Day - this Friday 21st September
Pope Francis’ encyclical “Laudato Si” is a message to “Care for our Common Home”. At St Pius X we are celebrating World Environment Day this Friday to encourage awareness and action for the protection of our environment and care for our common home. Leadership and working together for a better world is our theme for the day and coincides with World Peace Day. We will begin with a liturgy at 9.15am in the DeMazenod Hall and everyone is most welcome to attend.
Throughout the day there will be a variety of outdoor activities for students which will be fun and ‘messy’ and will include mud play and loose parts or ‘junk’ play for Reception and Year 1 students. Other activities include cubby building, whittling and nature craft for older students. There will also be opportunities for team building and problem solving and reflective and mindfulness activities to build a sense of wellbeing. Our student leaders and senior students will take a leadership role to support our younger student activities.
Students are asked to dress appropriately in casual clothes that are 'fine' to get dirty and allow for movement and are encouraged to be creative and wear something recycled. The student leaders will be judging the ‘best recycled costume’.
The Year 3-5 student leaders will be hosting a Nude Food Lunch and students are asked to bring food in reusable containers, however, lunch orders will be available from the canteen.
A Parent Workshop, run by KESAB, will be offered on “Making Beeswax Wraps” at 9.40am in the OSHC kitchen in the Activity Room. If you are interested in attending please email me at jbuhagiar@stpiusx.catholic.edu.au.
Registered Volunteers are most welcome to assist with activities during the day.
Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation to help support the day.
Youth Environment Council of South Australia (YECSA)
Caitlin and Suki are two year 7 students at St Pius X and will be representing our school in the Youth Environment Council of South Australia (YECSA). As part of YECSA, each member has to do a Project and Caitlin and Suki are working together on theirs. They have decided to hold a fundraiser for the Hahndorf Interim Animal Shelter this Friday, 21stSeptember during recess and lunch, where students and staff may purchase food such as cookies, cupcakes etc. with prices ranging from 50c-$2. Hahndorf Interim Animal Shelter will also appreciate donations of dried and canned food (for pets), kitty litter, blankets and towels as well as money - you can bring these donations to the Stall.
The Hahndorf Interim Animal Shelter is an emergency shelter for abandoned pets. None of the animals are put down because they are unwanted. The Shelter is run on a voluntarily basis and receives no government funding and this is why Caitlin and Suki chose to hold a fundraiser for this particular Shelter. They wanted to do something to help animals and a business run completely on volunteers probably needs more help than other animal shelters.

St Pius X's budding thespians will be performing in 2 plays - "The Billy Goats Tough" and "The Girl who cried Martian" - at Drama Day this Saturday, September 22nd at 1.00pm at the Walkerville Primary School Theatre with donations going to a Zimbabwe Orphanage. The actors are Siena G, Angus M, Riley P, Callum P, Caitlin W, Mia F, Conor W and Leo J.
All welcome!
