From the Principal - Greg Parker
I'm often asked by parents 'What's the best thing I can do to ensure my child gets the most from the learning opportunities at school?" or 'How can I help my child to be successful (is it extra homework, tuition...)? Actually, probably not.
We have just completed some posters with beautiful photos of some of our children including a statement of our commitment to each family. Our commitment is...'that each child matters.' It's a commitment that we take seriously and challenges us to be the best that we can be for your child.
This commitment led us to look at the school day and maximise learning opportunities for each child. Thus we program highly focussed phonics instruction from 8:50am, immediately after roll is taken each morning, when a child is best placed to engage with and 'soak up' the learning.
We ask in turn that parents and caregivers ensure that their child is at school by 8:45am so that they can be ready for these sessions. Children who come to school late are often 'behind the 8 ball' for the rest of the day trying to catch up.
We have noted an increasing number of children coming to school late regularly and ask those parents to please ensure that their children are here and benefit from the morning's crucial phonics instruction.
What's the best thing that you can do for your child's learning? Have them her ready for the start of the school day.
Next Tuesday, 21st August 2018, we celebrate the Feast of Saint Pius X. This is a special day for our school and parish community. We will begin our day with Mass in the hall at 9:15am and all members of our community are invited to attend. The Saint Pius X Community Service Award for service to our community will be presented at this time. Please arrive early to ensure you secure a seat! There will be morning tea served after Mass.
We are blessed to have the talented Andrew Chinn, a prominent Catholic composer and musician with us on this day. He will spend time working with our school choir and each class. Andrew will provide music for our Mass and will prepare the children for a concert which will commence at 1:45pm in the DeMazenod Hall. You are also invited to attend the concert. Please enter the school through the Front Office as normal.
We look forward to a wonderful day of celebration through music for our school Feast Day.

Book Week
This is an annual Australia-wide event celebrating the best in children’s books and promoting reading. The theme for 2018 is “Find Your Treasure”. There will be various activities during the week culminating in the bi-annual Parade at 9:00am on 24th August. Children are invited to dress up as a 'book character' that has inspired their love of reading. Parents and family members are welcome to attend the event. A Chinese gong will announce a quiet reading time for all classes after lunch during Book Week.
Premier’s Reading Challenge– a reminder that the Challenge concludes on Friday 7th September. Congratulations to the 70+ students who have already handed in their completed forms. It is not too late to enter as you only need to read 12 books, 8 from the PRC list and 4 other books. Great reading everyone!
From Jeff George - Ambassador for Backpacks 4 SA Kids
I just wanted to send a huge thank you to the St Pius X School community for their incredible support of Backpacks 4 SA Kids at the Pyjama Day (and “Posting Joy” Day) on 3rd August. It sure seemed like everyone had lots of fun – staff and students alike ! The volume of donated items was overwhelming and $697 was raised for this charity. Donated funds and items are essential for B4SAK to continue providing comfort, care and support for children within our community when they are at their most vulnerable and need it most.
To raise awareness and support the cause in the manner in which St Pius X demonstrated was “strength and kindness” at its best. What a fantastic community!
I look forward to seeing next year’s special PJ’s!
I do feel quite humbled and thank you once again and regards to all.
A rugby top, with the name Samuel D on the inside tag, has been lost - if you find it please return to Year 1H.
